Winter Mini Programs

Double J Riding Club classes and activities are designed to support both homeschooled students and students away from school with hands on learning in a variety of academic, physical, and social areas including: Early Childhood Education, Science, Creative Arts, History and Cultures, Foreign Language, Equine and Animal Sciences, Nature, Dance and Physical Education. Taught by trained professionals, each class/activity is comprised of no more than 8 students providing a small, safe, and stimulating environment, in which students are able to interact and collaborate with their peers around rich and developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Winter Mini Programs run for 3 weeks starting the week of November 29th and are open to children from Kindergarten-12th grade. All ages are recommended ages.

Looking for a quiet place to support your E-Learning? Double J Riding Club offers a small group format in which your student can quietly focus on their E-Learning. Staffed by our team of college educated instructors, we are here to help support your student navigate their work. This is a drop in class where students can come and go during the hours provided. Activity stations will be set up for students who finish their work early. This is a great class for working parents who need additional care hours before or after classes.

If you are here for classes during the day, we can offer a supervised, quiet, clean place in which to have your lunch. Hand washing is mandatory and no more than two to a table in order to maintain social distance and provide safety to all our students.

Cost: $5 dollars per day or $32 for the whole semester for a specific day.

Junior Farmers
Ages 4-7

A pre-school age enrichment program for kids who love animals and nature that will foster their independence and curiosity as they get down and dirty on the farm!

At Double J Farm, our Junior Farmers learn through hands-on, nature-based experiences that address the developmental needs of children ages 3 to 6 as they explore the plant life and animals at our farm.

These 60 minute classes take learning to a higher level than the Tiny Animal Adventure class and are primarily drop off. After one class, your animal lover or critter extraordinaire will want to join us all season long for this unique, down in the dirt learning experience that will last a lifetime!

Every week has its own theme, so your child will learn new concepts all year long! These themes guide our educational activities and include a variety of: animal, agricultural, science, and nature topics.

Little Art Explorers
Ages 1-4

Little Art Explorers has so many benefits from squishing in paint, exploring colors and textures, learning about nature around us, developing fine and gross motor skills, making friends and building confidence at an early age! This extremely messy art class will teach babies and toddlers the basics of art mediums, colors, and shapes as they use fun art tools to create little masterpieces. A farm tour is included at the end of each class. All students must attend with an actively participating adult and wear clothes that they are ready to get messy in! (PAINT WILL BE USED!)

Tiny Animal Adventures
Ages 1- 4 years old

A uniquely structured program that offers a place for caregivers and toddlers to play, learn and develop while meeting the animals at Double J!

What's more tot-thrilling than farm animals? Little ones can learn about and experience real live farm animals in the Tiny Animal Adventure classes at the Double J's Farm! (Formerly known as Parents & Tots)

In each 60 minute class, a parent/toddler duo might explore the farm grounds, listen to an animal-centric story, create a craft, feed animals, participate in Farm Yoga or play various games!

Each class is themed (e.g. Lucky Lizards, Animals of the Night, etc.) and will guide our activities for the week.
This is the perfect way to get your little one ready for Junior Farmers and a great activity for parents and siblings ranging in age!

Santa's Little Helpers
Ideal for Ages 4-7

Calling all Elves to come join us as we help Santa give our horses some Holiday Cheer!!  Spoiling them with Horse Cookies, decorating them for their Holiday party and working on a craft to commemorate the season are just some of the activities.  And, on top of all of that fun, THERE WILL BE A PONY RIDE IN EVERY CLASS!!

Barnyard Beats: Animal Caroling
Ideal for Ages 1-4

Equine Science
Ages 7 and Up

 

Students in this course will gain a strong understanding of horsemanship through readings, hands on activities, and journaling. During this educationally rich science program, students will learn: how horses move, their anatomy, horse's jobs, horse's gaits, their wants and needs, proper care, horse history and art!

The journal resource is PACKED with interactive pages that will allow students to travel through horse and human history, document their results from various experiences, record what they've learned, complete breed of the week profiles, understand equestrian vocabulary and even some crafts!

Introduction to Veterinary: Large and Small Animals

Through out this course students will learn the importance of preventive care, proper diet, common illnesses, animal anatomy, wound care and more using the animals on Double J Riding Club's property. This course will work with both our large and small animals and will include the full horse veterinary mini session within the schoolwork.

Slither, crawl or hop on over to Double J for a skin crawling good time!  Have you ever wondered about the animal noises that they hear at night? Join this 3 week class and learn all about the wonderful world of amphibians and insects! Students in this course will gain a strong understanding about habitats and the animals and plant life that call them home! The class will be enhanced through readings, hands-on-activities, experiments, observations, and journaling.

Zoology: Weird Things Animals Do
Ages 7 and Up

Does your child have a love and interest for animals?!

In this 3 week class students will study animals of all shapes and sizes, from tiny insects to large mammals and investigate what interesting and weird things that they do. From hippos flinging poop to the fishes that clean it up, come and learn about all the weird things animals do! Students will learn about how we and other animal care organizations care for their animals. The class will be enhanced through readings, journaling, and interaction with animals.

Birds: Our Feathery Friends
Ages 7 and Up

Fly on over to Double J to answer some feathery questions.  How do birds live in the winter? How do they stay warm? What do they eat? Do indoor birds know it's winter outside? Do they like snow? These are a few of the questions we will answer as we learn all about our fine feathered friends.  Plenty of “hands on” activities will be included, like making bird feeders and treats to help the birds through the winter season. We will make Christmas shaped bird treats, bird nests, learn how many feathers a bird needs to keep warm and most interesting of all, we will dissect owl pellets to see what they eat to survive during the winter.  What a hoot!!

Farm Hand 101
Ages 7 and Up

Farm Hand 101 will learn all about real farming and teamwork while doing age-appropriate farm chores and animal care in a fun way! Chores include giving animals baths, collecting eggs, gardening, caring for animals, making natural cleaners, cleaning habitats, helping feed animals, creating animal enrichments, and more! Rubber boots and messy clothes are mandatory.

Junior Zookeepers
Ages 5 and Up
A caged animal.

The animals on the farm need your help. Is their habitat clean, do they have food, do they need a bath? Animals need different kinds of care every day and as a Double J junior zookeeper you will learn hands how to care for a chameleon, guinea pigs and rats. Be ready to meet these fun and different animals. Activities may include: learning animal fun facts, building toys for animals, creating animal art masterpieces, viewing animal habitats, caring for animals, playing fun animal themed games, cooking animal treats in the kitchen, and of course meeting the animals!

 

This hands on and classroom oriented class is perfect for avid animal lovers to extend their animal science knowledge.

Slime Chemistry and other fun experiments!
Ages 7 and Up

Science can be gooey fun while learning chemistry!! Slime time provides an entertaining lesson on polymers and their properties. These somewhat complex chemistry topics are introduced in a fun and hands-on way to help them see science in action! Each messy and fun filled week will go over a different topic for chemistry! Week 1 will cover the properties of polymers and cross-linking agents. Week 2 will go over the basics of acid-base reactions. Week 3 will go over the basics of the scientific method as students design and implement their own slime based experiment!

Volcanoes
Ages 7 and Up
Spend 3 weeks studying Volcanoes in this enjoyable science study. In this study you will learn about what causes volcanoes, the different types of volcanoes, lava, and so much more. Students will work on a variety of experiments in class including creating their own volcanoes. This study is filled with interactive journaling, hands-on activities and reading that comes to life!

Conservation: The 3 R's
Ages 7 and Up

The Three R’s course highlights the “how” and “why” in addition to the basic skills to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Showing children how to recycle properly is an important step toward a cleaner and brighter future. Caring for the environment at a younger age teaches valuable lessons about sustainability and responsibility skills. In addition, children will learn about where products come from, how they are made.

Kids Garden Club
Ages 7 and Up

This class is perfect for the gardeners of tomorrow!! What makes leaves green? Why do plants need sunlight to thrive? Why do plants grow better in loamy soil than clay? This course explores plant science in addition to craft activities that allow children to create something beautiful all while accumulating plant knowledge and responsibility. Our Kids Garden Club is a year round class that builds on gardening knowledge throughout the seasons.

STEM Science (Biology)
Ideal for Grades 6th-10th

Instructed by Rebecca Irwin

Designed for home school families who want to provide high-level science education to their children, students in this course will be challenged to higher order thinking through activity-based learning.

 

Week 1: Cell structure and function: Cell class will look at cells from major groups of life and learn function of different cell parts
Week 2: Plant structure and function: Plant and animal classes will look at diversity within the group and how different structures work
Week 3: Animal structure and function: Animal structure class would include dissection (earthworm, crayfish, and frog)*

Students will use and interact with the animals and plant life at Double J, as they expand their knowledge and understanding of the world around us!

*Activities include data analysis, so students should understand math through fractions and decimals.

Classes are appropriate for ages about 10-16.

Experimental Science: Dry Ice Experiments
Ages 7 and Up

What’s cooler than cool? Ice cold! Dry ice, that is! This experimental science class brings students up close and personal with dry ice with a whole host of cool experiments. Following the scientific method, we’ll learn what dry ice is as well as see what it does in different situations. What happens when you add it to water? How does it interact with soap? With metal? Come to Double J and find out!

Dry ice has the ability to be dangerous if handled improperly because it is so cold. Lab safety is very important to us. All students will be provided with lab gear (goggles and aprons), and the dry ice will only be handled using heavy duty gloves and/or tongs with teacher supervision.

Home Alone: Booby Trap Engineering
Ages 7 and Up

Uh-oh! The Wet Bandits are here and we need to stop them from coming into the farmhouse! Let’s use some simple machines and engineer a booby trap to catch them! Armed with some loose parts and a lot of holiday spirit, this class offers kids the chance to stretch their engineering muscles and design “traps” that can catch those sneaky no-gooders, just like our friend Kevin McCallister. On the last day, we’ll test them out and try to catch a miniature version of Harry and Marv!

Minecraft STEM
Ages 7 and Up

No computer needed for this class! Have you ever wondered how those minecarts move around hills without redstone? How does redstone work, anyway? Come explore the science side of Minecraft with us, and find out for yourself! This class explores circuits, potential & kinetic energy, and simple hydraulics outside of the game in ways that young builders can test out for themselves in the minecraft realm at home.

Egyptian Adventure
Ages 7 and Up
“Walk like an Egyptian” to the farm to learn all about the famous kingdom on the Nile! This mini-semester course is perfect for your young Egyptologists, featuring a whole pyramid full of hands-on learning and experiments. Besides learning about the gods and what daily life was like in Ancient Egypt, we’ll make papyrus, read and write in hieroglyphics, and even mummify apples!

A Brief History of Great Empires
Ages 7 and Up

Join us as we march towards greatness in History!!  Students will have a regal time as they learn about some of the most important moments in human history. Each week will cover the rise, fall, and defining moments of three empires through hands-on learning and activities. The 3 weeks are as follows.

  • Ottoman Empire
    At its height, between the 16th and 17th centuries CE, the Islamic empire of Süleyman the Magnificent covered portions of three continents: Southeastern Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. The Ottoman Empire collapsed in the early years of the 20th century.
  • British Empire
    At its greatest extent, early in the 20th century, the British Empire comprised nearly a quarter of the planet and an equal percentage of its population. Many of the territories it colonized have since gained independence, though several remain part of what is known as the Commonwealth of Nations today.
  •  Roman Empire.
  • The ancient empire, centered on the city of Rome, was established in 27 BCE following the demise of the Roman Republic and continuing to the final eclipse of the empire of the West in the 5th century CE.

A Victorian Christmas
Ages 7 and Up

Step into our time machine with us and see how Christmas was celebrated in historic England! Did you know that decorating Christmas trees wasn’t done in England until Queen Victoria and Prince Albert did it? In this hands-on class, we’ll explore Victorian Christmas traditions that we still do today, like Christmas crackers and caroling, and rediscover some that were lost to time. We’ll even decorate a tree the Victorian way! Petticoats and top hats not required.

Christmas Around The World
Ages 7 and Up

Wesolych Swiat! Merry Christmas! This week at Double J join us on a Christmas journey to discover the sights, traditions and games of Poland during this celebrated time of year. Each child will make and take home a handmade angel ornament.

Boun Natale! Merry Christmas! Travel to Italy this holiday season to discover stories and traditions of how this magical time of year is celebrated.  Together we will make a Presepio (Christmas manger) and learn the customs behind it.

Yesu yana Kaunacce! Jesus loves me! This week we will be visiting Nigeria and share in the anticipated joy of the Christmas holiday. Through stories and songs we will celebrate the holiday and create a special holiday drum.

Holiday Cookie Decorating
Ages 5 and Up

Have a ball this holiday season decorating delicious holiday cookies! Students will discover a new technique as they learn all about creating colors, making icing and different ways to decorate our favorite holiday treat. During class they will also get to meet some of indoor animal friends while the cookies bake! Student will go home with 4 delicious cookies to share with their family after every class.

Cartoon Drawing
Ages 7 and Up

Calling all vivid imaginations and silly senses of humor. Learning to draw can be fun, especially while creating wacky characters and funny expressions. Cartooning for beginners introduces how to sketch people, animals, and objects. Using a step by step method, this class teaches a variety of techniques including (but not limited to) shape variation, simplification, caricature, and exaggeration. Who’s going to be the next Charles Schultz??

Polar Express
Ages 4 and Up

All aboard!!!!!! Grab your robe and slippers for a magical ride on the Double J polar express. Before our train can leave the station, our box cars need some work. Will you help us get them ready?  First we need to make the train cars, then we need to decorate ( we want Santa to notice them) and lastly we will climb aboard and listen to the Polar Express, have hot chocolate and hopefully hear some jingle bells!

The Gift of Giving
Ages 5 and Up

“For it is in giving that we shall receive”.  Join us as we take time during the holiday season to send some cheer! The Gift of Giving will provide children an opportunity to volunteer and understand the importance of uplifting those within the community who may not get to visit loved ones during this holiday season. This is a great way to teach young ones how to be compassionate and kind during these unprecedented times. The Gift of Giving teaches the true meaning of the holiday season with hands-on activities which include creating cards that will be sent out to seniors, children undergoing treatments in hospitals, and baking treats for furry friends in shelters in search of their forever home.

This will be a free activity!

Join us as we paint, draw, build and create with clay, wire, paints, pastels, and more in this explorative and fun Art Lab! Students will make exciting projects with a different medium each week while having plenty of creative exploration time in this encouraging and supportive environment. ​This class is fun, educational, and accessible for young artists of all experience levels. Projects are Clay ornaments, DIY Wood decorations and Stick Christmas trees.

Calling all Elves!!  Santa has buried a chest full of treats. With help from the animals, and a special Christmas map, together we will find the holiday treasures hidden on the farm. We will learn how to make a “pirate worthy” map, read clues and most importantly dig for treasure.   Each week we will learn about and create maps to guide us on a treasure hunt on the last day of class.

Class time: Cost: $60 for Winter Mini Semester

Session Dates: Mondays from 12:30-1:30 PM

Full Semester runs for 3 weeks starting the week of November 29th.
